Amharic Keyboard Online

A free virtual Amharic keyboard. Type Amharic in the Ge'ez script on any computer or phone. Spell each word in English letters and it turns into Amharic as you type: selam becomes ሰላም.

How to use the Amharic keyboard

Click or tap any key to add that character to the text box.

On a computer you can also type on your physical keyboard. Type the consonant and then the vowel: s, e gives ሰ and l, a gives ላ, so s, e, l, a, m gives ሰላም. The keys are those of an ordinary US keyboard. Untick “Type Amharic with my physical keyboard” to go back to your keyboard's normal letters.

When you are done, press Copy and paste the text into an email, a document or a chat. The “Search with” buttons open Google, YouTube, Wikipedia or Google Translate with what you typed.

How Amharic typing works

Each letter of the Ge'ez script (fidel) is a consonant with a vowel. Type the consonant, then the vowel, and the seven forms come out like this: le ለ, lu ሉ, li ሊ, la ላ, lie ሌ, l ል, lo ሎ. The consonant on its own gives the sixth form, ል.

Some sounds use capitals: t gives ተ but T gives ጠ, and c or ch gives ቸ but C gives ጨ. h gives ሀ, H gives ሐ and hh gives ኀ; s gives ሰ and S gives ጸ. x or sh gives ሸ, N or ny gives ኘ, and q gives ቀ.

A vowel on its own gives አ ኡ ኢ ኤ እ ኦ (a u i ie e o), and a doubled one the ዐ row: aamet gives ዓመት. : : gives the full stop ።, , gives ፣ and ; gives ፤.

Questions

Do I need to install anything?

No. The keyboard runs in your browser and works without changing any settings on your computer or phone.

How do I type ሏ, ቋ and the other w-forms?

After the consonant, type u and then the vowel: lua gives ሏ, qua gives ቋ and gua gives ጓ.

Which typing scheme is this?

The phonetic scheme of the common Amharic keyboards, such as the Ge'ez Frontier Foundation keyboard for Keyman. If you have typed Amharic on a computer before, it should feel familiar.

How do I correct a letter?

While you are typing a word, Backspace removes one English letter at a time, so ለ turns back into ል. After a space, it deletes whole letters again.

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

Your text is kept only in your own browser so it is still there if you reload the page. It is not sent to us. Press Clear to remove it. If you use a “Search with” button, your text is sent to that site as a search.
