A free virtual Tamil keyboard. Type Tamil on any computer or phone. Type a word the way it sounds in English letters (vaNakkam becomes வணக்கம்), or use the standard Tamil 99 layout.
How to use the Tamil keyboard
Click or tap any key to add that character to the text box.
On a computer you can also type on your physical keyboard. Choose “Type how it sounds (phonetic)” above the keyboard and type a word the way it sounds: t, a, m, i, zh gives தமிழ். Or choose Tamil 99, where H gives க and S gives இ. The small grey character on a key shows the matching key on a US English keyboard. Untick “Type Tamil with my physical keyboard” to go back to your keyboard's normal letters.
When you are done, press Copy and paste the text into an email, a document or a chat. The “Search with” buttons open Google, YouTube, Wikipedia or Google Translate with what you typed.
Tamil phonetic typing chart
Each box shows what to type, on the left, and the Tamil letter it gives. After a consonant, a vowel becomes its vowel sign, drawn here on a dotted circle, and a adds nothing, because every consonant already carries that vowel. Two consonants in a row join together. A consonant at the end of a word is written with a virama (்) unless you type a vowel after it.
How the Tamil 99 layout works
Tamil 99 is the layout set by the Tamil Nadu government. Vowels are under the left hand and consonants under the right.
Type a consonant and then a vowel to get the combined letter: H (க) then S (இ) gives கி. Typing the same consonant twice, or a pair such as ந then த, adds the pulli to the first automatically: க்க, ந்த. F types the pulli (்) on its own.

Do I need to install anything?
No. The keyboard runs in your browser and works without changing any settings on your computer or phone.
Can I type Tamil by spelling it in English letters?
Yes. Choose “Type how it sounds (phonetic)” above the keyboard and type each word the way it sounds: vaNakkam gives வணக்கம். The chart on this page lists every spelling.
How do I tell ந, ன and ண apart in phonetic mode?
n gives ந at the start of a word and before t or d, and ன elsewhere; nh always gives ந, and N gives ண.
Which keyboard layout is this?
Tamil 99, the layout set by the Tamil Nadu government and used in schools and offices. Phonetic mode works like the phonetic keyboards many people use on their phones.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
