How to use the Khmer keyboard
Click or tap any key to add that character to the text box.
On a computer you can also type on your physical keyboard. The keys follow the standard Khmer keyboard, so pressing K gives ក and pressing A gives ា. The small grey character on a key shows the matching key on a US English keyboard. Untick “Type Khmer with my physical keyboard” to go back to your keyboard's normal letters.
When you are done, press Copy and paste the text into an email, a document or a chat. The “Search with” buttons open Google, YouTube, Wikipedia or Google Translate with what you typed.
Khmer letters on this keyboard
Khmer has 33 consonants and many vowel signs, so the keyboard uses two layers: the most common characters are on the normal layer, and the rest come with Shift. Vowel signs are typed after the consonant, even when they are drawn before it: ក then E gives កេ.
To put a consonant below another (a subscript), press Space and then the consonant: ខ, Space, ម gives ខ្ម, as in ខ្មែរ. Space types the coeng sign (្) that does this, and Shift + Space types a space, as on the Khmer keyboard in Windows.
The Khmer digits ០ to ៩ are on the number keys, and Western digits on AltGr. The full stop ។ is on the . key.
Questions
Do I need to install anything?
No. The keyboard runs in your browser and works without changing any settings on your computer or phone.
Why does Space not type a space?
As on the Khmer keyboard in Windows, Space types the coeng (្), which puts the next consonant below the one before it. Press Shift + Space for a space. Khmer does not put spaces between words, only between phrases.
How do I type ខ្មែរ?
Type ខ (X), then Space and ម (M) for the subscript, then ែ (Shift + E) and រ (R).

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
Your text is kept only in your own browser so it is still there if you reload the page. It is not sent to us. Press Clear to remove it. If you use a “Search with” button, your text is sent to that site as a search.
