How to use the Kurdish (Sorani) keyboard
Click or tap any key to add that character to the text box. Kurdish (Sorani) is written from right to left, so the text starts at the right edge and grows leftwards.
On a computer you can also type on your physical keyboard. The keys follow the Central Kurdish keyboard built into Windows, so pressing E gives ە and pressing O gives ۆ. The small grey character on a key shows the matching key on a US English keyboard. Untick “Type Kurdish (Sorani) with my physical keyboard” to go back to your keyboard's normal letters.
When you are done, press Copy and paste the text into an email, a document or a chat. The “Search with” buttons open Google, YouTube, Wikipedia or Google Translate with what you typed.
The Kurdish alphabet on this keyboard
Central Kurdish (Sorani) is written from right to left in a Kurdish alphabet based on the Arabic script. Unlike Arabic, it writes most vowels as letters: ا, ە, ی, ێ, و, ۆ and وو.
Kurdish letters have keys of their own or are on Shift: ە on E, ۆ on O, ڤ on V and ی on Y; with Shift, ڕ on R, ڵ on L and ێ on Y. Shift + W types وو.
The number row types Arabic-Indic digits (١٢٣). Shift + H is the zero-width non-joiner, labelled ZWNJ, which stops a letter joining the next one.
Questions
Do I need to install anything?
No. The keyboard runs in your browser and works without changing any settings on your computer or phone.
How do I type ڕ, ڵ and ێ?
Hold Shift and press R for ڕ, L for ڵ or Y for ێ.
What is the difference between ه and ە?
ه (on H) is the consonant h, and ە (on E) is the vowel e. They look alike at the end of a word, but they are different letters in Kurdish.
Is this for Kurmanji too?
No. This keyboard is for Central Kurdish (Sorani), written in the Arabic-based alphabet. Kurmanji is usually written in the Latin alphabet, which needs only a few extra letters such as ç, ê, î, ş and û.
