Japanese Keyboard Online

A free virtual Japanese keyboard. Type Japanese hiragana and katakana on any computer or phone. Type in romaji, the way Japanese people type: ka gives か, and capital letters give katakana.

How to use the Japanese keyboard

Click or tap any key to add that character to the text box.

On a computer you can also type on your physical keyboard. Type in romaji: k, o, n, n, i, c, h, i, h, a gives こんにちは. With Caps Lock on, the letters give katakana: K, O, -, H, I, - gives コーヒー. The keys are those of an ordinary US keyboard. Untick “Type Japanese with my physical keyboard” to go back to your keyboard's normal letters.

When you are done, press Copy and paste the text into an email, a document or a chat. The “Search with” buttons open Google, YouTube, Wikipedia or Google Translate with what you typed.

How romaji typing works

Type each syllable the way it sounds: k a gives か, s h i gives し and k y a gives きゃ. Until you type the vowel, the consonant stays as a Latin letter.

Double a consonant for the small っ: kitte gives きって. n n gives ん, and so does n before another consonant: shinbun gives しんぶん. x before a letter gives its small form: xa gives ぁ.

Capital letters give katakana, so Caps switches between hiragana and katakana. - gives the long-vowel mark ー, and , . [ ] give 、 。 「 」.

Questions

Do I need to install anything?

No. The keyboard runs in your browser and works without changing any settings on your computer or phone.

Can I type kanji?

Not yet. This keyboard types hiragana and katakana only: turning kana into kanji needs a large dictionary. For kanji, use the Japanese input built into Windows, macOS, Android or iOS.

How do I type katakana?

Type in capital letters: turn on Caps Lock, or hold Shift for a single syllable. KO-HI- gives コーヒー.

How do I type を, ぢ and づ?

wo gives を, di gives ぢ and du gives づ. Both common spelling systems work: shi and si give し, and tsu and tu give つ.

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

Your text is kept only in your own browser so it is still there if you reload the page. It is not sent to us. Press Clear to remove it. If you use a “Search with” button, your text is sent to that site as a search.
