Sinhala Keyboard Online

A free virtual Sinhala keyboard. Type Sinhala on any computer or phone. Type in Singlish, spelling words in English letters (aayuboovan becomes ආයුබෝවන්), or use the standard Wijesekara layout.

How to use the Sinhala keyboard

Click or tap any key to add that character to the text box.

On a computer you can also type on your physical keyboard. Choose “Type how it sounds (phonetic)” above the keyboard and type in Singlish: a, a, y, u, b, o, o, v, a, n gives ආයුබෝවන්. Or choose Wijesekara, where L gives ක and D gives ා. The small grey character on a key shows the matching key on a US English keyboard. Untick “Type Sinhala with my physical keyboard” to go back to your keyboard's normal letters.

When you are done, press Copy and paste the text into an email, a document or a chat. The “Search with” buttons open Google, YouTube, Wikipedia or Google Translate with what you typed.

Sinhala phonetic typing chart

Each box shows what to type, on the left, and the Sinhala letter it gives. After a consonant, a vowel becomes its vowel sign, drawn here on a dotted circle, and a adds nothing, because every consonant already carries that vowel. Two consonants in a row join together. A consonant at the end of a word is written with a virama (්) unless you type a vowel after it.

How the Wijesekara layout works

Wijesekara is the standard Sinhala layout in Sri Lanka (SLS 1134), based on the Sinhala typewriter. Most vowel signs are under the left hand and most consonants under the right.

Type the consonant first and the vowel sign after it, even when the sign is drawn before it: ක then F gives කෙ. A types the al-lakuna (්), which removes the vowel: ක්.

` adds the rakaransaya (ප then ` gives ප්‍ර) and Shift + H the yansaya (ක then Shift + H gives ක්‍ය).

Questions

Do I need to install anything?

No. The keyboard runs in your browser and works without changing any settings on your computer or phone.

What is Singlish?

Writing Sinhala words in English letters, as many people do in messages. In phonetic mode this keyboard turns Singlish into real Sinhala Unicode as you type: ammaa gives අම්මා. The chart on this page lists every spelling.

How do I tell ට and ත, or ඩ and ද, apart?

t gives ට and th gives ත; d gives ඩ and dh gives ද. Capitals give the aspirated letters: T gives ඨ, Th gives ථ and Dh gives ධ.

How do I type ං, ශ්‍රී and ක්‍ය?

x gives ං, so sixhala gives සිංහල. The rakaransaya and yansaya are added for you: shrii gives ශ්‍රී and kyaa gives ක්‍යා.

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

Your text is kept only in your own browser so it is still there if you reload the page. It is not sent to us. Press Clear to remove it. If you use a “Search with” button, your text is sent to that site as a search.
