German Keyboard Online

Type ä, ö, ü and ß on any computer or phone. Click the keys, or type on your own keyboard as if it were a German one.

How to use the German keyboard

Click or tap any key to add that character to the text box.

On a computer you can also type on your physical keyboard. The keys follow the German QWERTZ keyboard, so the key to the right of P gives ü. The small grey character on a key shows the matching key on a US English keyboard. Untick “Type German with my physical keyboard” to go back to your keyboard's normal letters.

When you are done, press Copy and paste the text into an email, a document or a chat. The “Search with” buttons open Google, YouTube, Wikipedia or Google Translate with what you typed.

German letters on this keyboard

German adds four letters to the Latin alphabet. ü is to the right of P, ö and ä are to the right of L, and ß is to the right of 0.

On a German keyboard Z and Y swap places, which is why the layout is called QWERTZ. Many punctuation marks also move: the hyphen is next to the right Shift.

AltGr shows the third layer, with @ on Q, € on E and the brackets on 7 to 0.

Questions

Do I need to install anything?

No. The keyboard runs in your browser and works without changing any settings on your computer or phone.

How do I type ä, ö and ü?

ü is the key to the right of P; ö and ä are the two keys to the right of L. Use Shift for Ä, Ö and Ü.

How do I type ß?

Press the key to the right of 0 on the number row.

Why are Y and Z swapped?

Z is much more common than Y in German, so the standard German keyboard puts it in the easier position.

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

Your text is kept only in your own browser so it is still there if you reload the page. It is not sent to us. Press Clear to remove it. If you use a “Search with” button, your text is sent to that site as a search.
