French Keyboard Online

Type é, è, à, ç and the other French accents on any computer or phone. Click the keys, or type on your own keyboard as if it were a French one.

How to use the French keyboard

Click or tap any key to add that character to the text box.

On a computer you can also type on your physical keyboard. The keys follow the AZERTY keyboard used in France, so the Q key gives a and the 2 key gives é. The small grey character on a key shows the matching key on a US English keyboard. Untick “Type French with my physical keyboard” to go back to your keyboard's normal letters.

When you are done, press Copy and paste the text into an email, a document or a chat. The “Search with” buttons open Google, YouTube, Wikipedia or Google Translate with what you typed.

The French AZERTY layout

On a French keyboard A and Q swap places, Z and W swap places, and M sits to the right of L. The number row types é, è, ç and à directly; hold Shift for the digits.

The circumflex is typed in two steps: press the ^ key (to the right of P, shown in colour), then the vowel, so ^ then e gives ê. With Shift the same key gives the tréma: ¨ then i gives ï.

AltGr shows the third layer, with @ on 0, € on E, # on 3 and the brackets.

Questions

Do I need to install anything?

No. The keyboard runs in your browser and works without changing any settings on your computer or phone.

How do I type numbers?

Hold Shift and press the number key, or turn on Shift on the on-screen keyboard first. Without Shift the number row gives accented letters and punctuation.

How do I type ê, î, ô, û, ë and ï?

Press the ^ key and then the vowel. For ë and ï, press Shift with that key first.

How do I type œ?

The standard French keyboard has no œ key. Type “oe”, or copy the letter from here: œ Œ.

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

Your text is kept only in your own browser so it is still there if you reload the page. It is not sent to us. Press Clear to remove it. If you use a “Search with” button, your text is sent to that site as a search.
