A free virtual Vietnamese keyboard. Type Vietnamese with all its accents on any computer or phone, using Telex: the typing method most Vietnamese use, which needs only ordinary letters.
How to use the Vietnamese keyboard
Click or tap any key to add that character to the text box.
On a computer you can also type on your physical keyboard. Type with Telex: v, i, e, e, t, j gives việt, and d, d gives đ. The keys are those of an ordinary US keyboard. Untick “Type Vietnamese with my physical keyboard” to go back to your keyboard's normal letters.
When you are done, press Copy and paste the text into an email, a document or a chat. The “Search with” buttons open Google, YouTube, Wikipedia or Google Translate with what you typed.
How Telex works
Double a letter to add a circumflex: a a gives â, e e gives ê and o o gives ô. Add w for the other marks: a w gives ă, o w gives ơ and u w gives ư. d d gives đ.
Add the tone with one letter, anywhere after the vowel: s sắc (á), f huyền (à), r hỏi (ả), x ngã (ã), j nặng (ạ), and z removes it. The tone lands on the right vowel by itself: tieengs gives tiếng, and dduowcj gives được.
Pressing the same key again undoes it: a s s gives as, which is how you type English words.
Questions
Do I need to install anything?
No. The keyboard runs in your browser and works without changing any settings on your computer or phone.
What is Telex?
The most widely used way to type Vietnamese. Accents are typed with ordinary letters after the vowel, so it works on any keyboard.
Can I use VNI instead?
Not yet. VNI types the accents with the number keys; this page uses Telex only.
Where does the tone mark go in words like hòa?
On the first vowel when the word ends in a vowel (hòa, thủy), and on the second when a consonant follows (toán). This is the traditional placement most people use.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
Your text is kept only in your own browser so it is still there if you reload the page. It is not sent to us. Press Clear to remove it. If you use a “Search with” button, your text is sent to that site as a search.
