How to use the Nepali keyboard
Click or tap any key to add that character to the text box.
On a computer you can also type on your physical keyboard. Choose “Type how it sounds (phonetic)” above the keyboard and type a word the way it sounds: n, e, p, a, a, l gives नेपाल. Or choose the traditional layout, where S gives क and G gives न. The small grey character on a key shows the matching key on a US English keyboard. Untick “Type Nepali with my physical keyboard” to go back to your keyboard's normal letters.
When you are done, press Copy and paste the text into an email, a document or a chat. The “Search with” buttons open Google, YouTube, Wikipedia or Google Translate with what you typed.
Nepali phonetic typing chart
Each box shows what to type, on the left, and the Nepali letter it gives. After a consonant, a vowel becomes its vowel sign, drawn here on a dotted circle, and a adds nothing, because every consonant already carries that vowel. Two consonants in a row join together. A full stop (.) types the danda (।).
How the traditional Nepali layout is arranged
The traditional layout is the one from Nepali typewriters, still used in offices across Nepal. Most consonants are on the normal layer, and Shift gives their half form, with a halant: S gives क and Shift + S gives क्.
F gives the vowel sign ा, L gives ि and Shift + L gives ी, ' gives ु and ] gives े. Type the consonant first and the sign after it, even when the sign is drawn to the left: क then L gives कि.
The Nepali digits १ to ० are on Shift with the number keys, and Western digits on AltGr. The danda (।) is on the . key.
Questions
Do I need to install anything?
No. The keyboard runs in your browser and works without changing any settings on your computer or phone.
What is Nepali Unicode?
Unicode is the standard way computers store text, so Nepali typed here works on Facebook, in Gmail, in Word and everywhere else. Text in older Nepali fonts such as Preeti only looks right where that font is installed; Unicode text needs no special font.
Can I type Nepali by spelling it in English letters?
Yes. Choose “Type how it sounds (phonetic)” above the keyboard and type each word the way it sounds: nepaalee gives नेपाली and dhanyavaad gives धन्यवाद. The chart on this page lists every spelling, such as aa for आ and kh for ख.
How do I type half letters and conjuncts?
In phonetic mode, type the consonants one after the other: k, y, a gives क्य. In the traditional layout, hold Shift and press the consonant to get its half form, then type the next consonant.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
Your text is kept only in your own browser so it is still there if you reload the page. It is not sent to us. Press Clear to remove it. If you use a “Search with” button, your text is sent to that site as a search.
