Urdu Keyboard Online
Type Urdu on any computer or phone. Click the keys, or type on your own keyboard and the letters come out in Urdu.
How to use the Urdu keyboard
Click or tap any key to add that character to the text box. Urdu is written from right to left, so the text starts at the right edge and grows leftwards.
On a computer you can also type on your physical keyboard. The keys follow the Urdu keyboard built into Windows, so pressing J gives ا and pressing K gives ک. The small grey character on a key shows the matching key on a US English keyboard. Untick “Type Urdu with my physical keyboard” to go back to your keyboard's normal letters.
When you are done, press Copy and paste the text into an email, a document or a chat. The “Search with” buttons open Google, YouTube, Wikipedia or Google Translate with what you typed.
The Urdu alphabet on this keyboard
Urdu is written from right to left in an extended form of the Arabic script. Letters join to their neighbours and change shape as you type; that happens on its own.
Shift usually gives a related letter: K is ک and Shift + K is گ, R is د and Shift + R is ڈ, F is ن and Shift + F is ں.
The Urdu full stop ۔ is on the . key and the comma ، on the , key. Urdu is usually printed in the flowing Nastaliq style; this page shows it in a plainer typeface, but the letters are the same and will take on the style of wherever you paste them.
Questions
Do I need to install anything?
No. The keyboard runs in your browser and works without changing any settings on your computer or phone.
How do I type ے and ی?
ے is on the C key and ی is on the L key.
Why does the text not look like Nastaliq?
The page uses a plainer typeface so that the small keys stay readable. The text you copy is ordinary Urdu and will appear in Nastaliq anywhere that uses a Nastaliq font.
Why do the letters change shape as I type?
Urdu letters join to their neighbours, so the same letter looks different at the start, middle and end of a word. This is correct and happens automatically.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
Your text is kept only in your own browser so it is still there if you reload the page. It is not sent to us. Press Clear to remove it. If you use a “Search with” button, your text is sent to that site as a search.
